The example.tr guide: domains directly under .tr (a.tr)

Last checked: Oct 9, 2026

For years .tr only had second-level extensions such as .com.tr and .org.tr. Since a process that began in 2023 you can also register directly under .tr: example.tr. TRABİS calls this structure "a.tr".

In short

  • An a.tr domain sits directly under .tr with no .com in between (e.g. trabis.tr). It works like any .com.tr domain.
  • Since 4 September 2024 at 14:30 anyone can apply for an a.tr name, first come, first served, through a registrar.
  • example.tr and example.com.tr are separate domains: owning one does not give you the other, and TRABİS does not redirect between them.

How the priority process worked

Before a.tr names opened to everyone, existing .tr holders got priority in turn. The procedures were published on 25.08.2023 and the priority process started on 14 September 2023.

CategoryWho had priorityOutcome
Category 1Institutions holding gov.tr, edu.tr, tsk.tr, bel.tr, pol.tr or k12.tr names on 14 September 2023Allocated automatically and free in TRABİS-KK, no application (free only for the first year for a.bel.tr and non-public a.k12.tr)
Category 2org.tr holders on 25.08.2023 that are professional bodies with public-institution status, public-benefit associations, tax-exempt foundations, or worker and employer organizationsApplication with proof; first allocation fee 150 TL
Category 3Holders on 25.08.2023 of, in this order: kep.tr, av.tr, dr.tr, com.tr, org.tr, net.tr, gen.tr, web.tr, name.tr, info.tr, tv.tr, bbs.tr, tel.trApplications 14 February – 7 August 2024; allocations completed on 27.08.2024; first allocation fee 150 TL

When the same name existed under several extensions

Priority followed the order above. In category 3, for example, if a name was registered both as av.tr and com.tr, the a.tr name went to the av.tr holder. Applying early in category 3 gave no advantage; the extension order decided.

How to get an example.tr now

  • Check whether the name is free; you can look it up on whoistool.
  • Apply through an accredited registrar (list). The rule is first come, first served: the moment the application reaches TRABİS counts.
  • TRABİS announced that some allocations may get a second review in which documents can be requested, and that applications against the rules may be cancelled outright.
  • According to TRABİS's FAQ, after the priority process the a.tr allocation and yearly renewal fee is 100 TL; registrars may charge different amounts.

Managing a category 1 name

a.tr names allocated automatically in category 1 are held at TRABİS-KK. If your matching .gov.tr or .edu.tr name is at another registrar, the a.tr name must be moved there within one year of allocation. In category 1, actions on the .b.tr domain also apply to the linked a.tr name, not the other way round.
