Frequently asked questions

›What is a whois lookup?

It is the record that shows who a domain is registered to, through which registrar and until when. Most extensions publish it over RDAP today; some still use classic WHOIS on port 43.

›Why can't I see the registrant's name?

Because of privacy laws such as the GDPR, most registries and registrars redact personal data. Redacted fields are marked as such in the result.

›Is "Available" definitive?

A domain looks available when its registry has no record of it. Reserved and premium names, and lookups that hit the registry's rate limit, are shown as "Unknown"; to be sure, try adding the name to a cart at a registrar.

›How fresh is the data?

Whois results are cached for 6 hours for registered domains and 5 minutes for available ones; DNS records for at most 5 minutes. Each card shows when its data was fetched and whether it came from the cache; press "r" to refresh.
